10 sessions, 20 sessions, 30 session….

March 14, 2012 at 5:05 pm 13 comments

“In 10 sessions, you feel better, 20 sessions you look better, 30 sessions you have a completely new body.”

You’ve heard and read this quote over and over again. What’s it about and is this so?

You know that the more often you do Pilates, the more quickly and intensely you see and feel a difference in your body. The more you do anything, the more you learn and change. That’s how change happens…through repetition…and not repeating just once a month, but often. When we study anything, if we practice at least three (3) times a week, we learn and reinforce. Every other day. Between practice sessions, do you stop working? No, no…you are processing and evaluation and adjusting subconsciously and even consciously between sessions. Then the next day you practice again. This is how we study a language, a musical instrument, a form of dance, etc…same thing with exercise and Pilates.

Now, what about this 10, 20, 30 thing?

When I’ve spoken to former clients of Mr. Pilates, I am reminded that this statement was 10, 20, 30 sessions with Mr. Pilates himself…and 3 times a week! Can you imagine how much you would change working with him?

So, it’s not 30 sessions over 4 months. It’s 12 sessions, at least, a month…that’s just over 2 months of sessions with the master of masters…change will happen.

Does this mean that your clients can’t see results with us/we who are not Mr. Pilates? Of course they will see results…and do!

With that, should you use this fun 10, 20, 30 statement…please use it well. Ensure that your clients commit to 3 times a week and work with the best teacher to get those results! It won’t happen with less. 10 sessions with 3 per week means that in just over 3 weeks they will likely feel better…and feeling is where it all begins. We feel results before we see them. 3 weeks at 3 times a week of continuous focused and strong (appropriate for the individual client) movement for 55 minutes to feel a difference. Let’s not lure our clients to believe anything other. Then 20 sessions with 3 per week means that in just over 6 weeks they will likely see a difference and look better. That’s a month and a half of sincere commitment. Then we’ve got 30 sessions with 3 per week. That’s 10 weeks. 10 weeks is 2 and a half months. That’s a serious commitment to have a completely new body.

Now…when you talk 10, 20, 30 in your marketing, are you sure your clients are taking 3 private sessions with the highest level teacher?

And…

When Mr. Pilates was alive, he was also encouraging his clients to do the mat work on their own at home. He wanted people to do Pilates at least 4 times a week to really make a difference. He wrote the seminal home Pilates workout book “Return to Life Through Contrology” before our modern colleagues wrote their books and taped their videos. Then man had a plan for fitness. If we use this phrase…we must use it correctly.

Now, does that mean that our clients cannot benefit with less than 3 times a week for months and hopefully always? Of course not! People can achieve a lot with 1 or 2 times a week if they apply the actions they learn in Pilates (not the exercises, but the actions for stability and opposition) to their other activities, workouts and life! Some people might only need 1 session a month to made tremendous changes.

Is appropriate to encourage our clients to do 3 sessions. If their schedules and bank accounts don’t allow that, then 2 or 1 or supplement with group classes or take with multiple levels of teachers and practice at home…let’s help them get the most out of the time and money they spend.

That brings me to homework. Why not give your clients homework. I remember it being very effective for me when I first started. I was told to do 5 repetitions of each of the Abdominal Series of Five every day. At first, I was a little shocked that I had homework…then excited! I did it and, no surprise, I got stronger! I tell my clients at the end of the session on Day 1 that they have homework. They do look shocked until I tell them what it is: during the day, as often as you can recall, lift your abdominals in and up and lift your lower back bones. Maybe you’ll remember 1 time a day, maybe more…but anything is more than you’ve been doing since this is a new set of actions…so that’s what you can do for yourself until we meet again. In time, I give them more and more of the work until they start asking for lists and such to use while on vacation, etc. Doing Pilates outside of the session becomes the norm.

Back to 10, 20, 30….clearly it is a great marketing tool! It really works when done as intended: 3 times a week in private sessions with the top teacher. It will even work with the least senior teacher. But 3 times a week in privates. Less than that will work, too. Classes instead of privates will work, too…but make sure you know what you’re saying when you state “In 10 sessions, you feel better, 20 sessions you look better, 30 sessions you have a completely new body.” Know what was meant by it…the context when Mr. Pilates said it and consider how you will ensure that you’re giving what you’re saying.

Always so straightforward I am…it’s true. We have to take responsibility for what we say, teach, share in this burgeoning business we call Pilates. We must critically think, examine, determine if what we learn and teach is so…is true.

And…then do we do what we’re asking our clients to do? 3 times a week of full-out Pilates? At one of the studios I teach out of, this one teacher always comes by during my workout and asks “Pilates, again?” or “working out again?”. And I say “of course”!

Work out, enjoy, teach well, critically think!

WORKSHOPS

Great Groups and Sensational Semis – 3 hours
3PMA CECs
Group classes and Semi-Privates are a reality in modern day Pilates, but were you ever really trained on how to make them successful? Shari will teach you the guidelines, tools and techniques to easily teach flowing, fun and fantastic Groups and Semi-Privates Sessions on all Apparatus. Learn to mix up what you are teaching to add variety, and also how to work with multiple levels of clients at one time so they can grow individually. Be ready to learn and practice these skills in this dynamic workshop.

The Shoulder Girdle: A Delicate Balance – 3 hours
3PMA CECs
The Shoulder Girdle is a complex system. When I first started teaching, all I knew was “pull your wings down” and “crack a walnut”. The more I study biomechanics, the more I know there is very little down and no cracking. It’s a delicate balance of bone, muscles, ligaments and tendons… and constant reassessing. Dynamic stability is what we are looking for. Let’s spend time studying where we’re going with the shoulder girdle and how to get there in Pilates. We’ll take time with the anatomy and biomechanics, Pilates exercises, common aliments and all of your questions. Take a moment to review what you already know before the workshop… then we can grow from there.

Joseph Pilates. Retrospective and Perspective – 1 hour
This is one of the most important workshops of the weekend.
1PMA CEC
If you call yourself a Pilates teacher then it is essential you know and can talk about Mr. Pilates. The more you know about Pilates the man where he came from, and what he was looking to achieve, the more inspired you will be, and can inspire your clients!

Teaching the Tower Classes – 2 hours
2PMA CECs
“Use what you’ve learned in Sat.’s Great Groups and Serious Semis” to deepen the hands-on skills and creative projects for Sundays Teaching Tower Class”. In your Tower classes, there are people of all levels, many who have never seen or been on the Tower in your class and some who are pretty advanced, as well. How do you create a class that takes care of them all? Let’s take the time to learn how to create a really safe, strong and challenging classes on the Tower. The are special guidelines and progressions you can follow and great ways to make a fantastic class for everyone… including you as a teacher! Shake up your classes, learn new and exciting variations and progressions to challenge both physically and mentally clients of all levels.

Flow, Rhythm and Opposition – Making the session a workout at any level – 4 hours
4PMA CECs
This is the ‘giant’ in workshop learning. Flow is much more than moving quickly through a list of exercises. Let’s figure out what flow is and how to create it within each move, reception and exercise. Flow has a lot to do with how you think of the workout and how you use your voice to set rhythms, give accents and emphasize certain points of each exercise. It will change your teaching for the better. Opposition; the key to stability. Every exercise must continually lengthen and deepen…..nothing is held tightly or compressed, learn how to cue opposition into the Pilates work out and into your clients bodies.

I loved this post Sherri! I believe in those 3 numbers because they changed my body and mind, but yes, I was doing it about 5 times a week because I was able to go as much as possible while I was teacher training. It was the best time of my life, to take “free” lessons from master instructors anytime I wanted to! But its true, how many people have that luxury?

I always try to get people to do more of the mat work at home, and this inspires me to give even more homework and check in on them to make sure they did over the weekend! I usually joke around with them and say, ‘you can try this at home, I know you will!’ and of course they laugh. But I should really check in on them more seriously and see if even better results show up.

I do disagree about one thing though; I don’t think clients need to necessarily take these privates with a “senior” instructor. I’m pretty sure even those of us who have only been teaching less than five years are as capable of changing bodies as the more experienced ones. We’re probably just a little less articulate. 🙂

    I love your blog girl!!

Jodi! I’ve been remiss in writing back to comments. I’m so sorry! I was teaching in Europe, then moved to a new apartment…but I’m getting on the ball, now!

Thank you, as always, for reading and thinking about this! I do agree with you that clients can benefit from the most junior teachers as well as the most senior. Indeed. They can even benefit from a book, sometimes…sometimes. But what Mr. Pilates was saying…and really to get what he was talking about so that when we do the 10, 20, 30 we know what we’re actually advertising…especially if we’re quoting him: He was saying that with HIM. So…that is why I reference the most senior instructor in the studio. I hope that makes sense.

You see…lots of people use this phrase, but we have to make sure we’re providing the promise that he was stating…and that came from his hands. Now…he’s gone and none of us are him. Can we provide great stuff? Sure, but let’s understand what he was truly saying!

With that…I do believe that 10, 20, 30 is the way! And 3 times a week! Senior, Junior…we all can help clients!!

      Thank you, Jodi!!!!

    Sherri
I knocked, I sought, you answered! Thanks for writing this article. I can now explain this concept to my clients where they can understand what Mr. Pilates was going for.

In today’s society people want things “yesterday” so sometimes it is very difficult trying to explain that the change they are looking for will take time. However, two and half months is not long at all to reap the benefits of working out with intention.

Love reading your blogs…hope to work with you again soon.

      Hi, Michele,

I’m so sorry it’s taken me this long to respond to your comment! You know that’s not like me! I was teaching for 2 weeks in Europe when you commented and then came home to move to a new apartment and get settled in while recovering from a heavy 2 weeks, jet lag, etc…So thank you for your patience!

People do want things yesterday! Crazy! Patience is indeed a virtue! Something we must all cultivate. (Thank you for being so patient for my reply!) two and a half months…nothing in the broad scheme of things! A have a client who for 45 years has had forward head posture. She suddenly thinks that she should be able to correct it in one session. I don’t care how bright a woman she is (and she is very bright) or body aware…it’s going to take time. Even if it takes 10 years to have major progress…10 years is nothing in the scheme of things. And it’s the bit by bit progress in life that we must truly appreciate. Not just the major milestones…the bit by bit is precious and overlooked!

Thank you for having asked about this quote and for being so supportive! I hope to see you soon!

      All the best!

Thank you so much for your wonderful blogs. I read and savor each one. You have enhanced my own practice and also how I teach. The benefits have a ripple effect! Each week I post a “Word of the Week” and last week it was “Snap.” I went to a fabric store and bought medium sized snaps and put them on big pink safety pins for my clients. To add to the fun, the snaps were displayed in a “pilata-rita” glass that a client made for me. I also borrowed some ideas from your article on Pilates Olympics: I went to the Dollar Store and bought “silver” trays and plastic champagne flutes for balancing on laps during Short Box Round Back, Straight Back and twist variations. The guys especially enjoyed the competition and challenged each other to hold the platters (with flutes!) over their heads and “serving” the platters when they leaned back doing Straight Back with a twist. I think the sight of me running to catch flying champagne flutes was worth the price of admission! Many thanks again!

      Hello, Valya!

I must apologize! I am usually a very prompt replier to comments. When you wrote, I had just come back from 2 weeks teaching in Europe and had immediately moved into a new apartment. I had so much going on that my reply went by the wayside until just now. I hope you accept my apology…and thank you for your patience!

Thank you, too, for reading the blog and going full-out with images and tools! I love that you bought those snaps! “Silver” trays and plastic champagne flutes!!! I constantly say that this stuff (Pilates) is fun! Why not make it fun?! We don’t always need props…but sometimes it’s really helpful! Why not?!

A lovely colleague of ours just opened a studio and named it “Pilates Fun”! I’m so glad! Not a serious name…just joy!

Please keep me posted on your prop-buying ways! I love it!

      All the very best!
